Tribute special to master carpenter Norm Abram to air on Arkansas PBS December 17

‘The House That Norm Built’ recognizes television trailblazer

CONWAY, Ark. (Arkansas PBS) — After over four decades, “This Old House’s” master carpenter and pioneer of the home improvement television genre Norm Abram is officially leaving the show and hanging up his toolbelt. Abram will be sent off in style with a one-hour tribute special “The House That Norm Built” airing on Arkansas PBS Saturday, Dec. 17, at 12:30 p.m.

The special will highlight and chronicle 43 years of Abram’s incredible career featuring classic moments, archived footage, interviews and memories from celebrities, friends, peers and those who worked alongside him. Abram’s inspiration reached far and wide for a humble man who became a national celebrity through his uncompromising craftsmanship, trademark plaid shirt, impersonations on popular sitcoms, bits on late night TV shows, morning shows, nationally syndicated cartoons and as the ultimate authority in home improvement. He appeared in over 1,000 episodes of “This Old House,” worked on over 50 home renovation projects and hosted more than 280 episodes of “The New Yankee Workshop.”

It all started for Abram on Christmas Eve in 1958 as he went with his father, a Boston carpenter, on a job installing hardwood floors. They installed the floors the old-fashioned way – with cut nails and a skill saw turned upside down on a milk crate. That first job led to many weekends and summer breaks spent with his father learning the discipline of methodical pace and common sense. Twenty years after that Christmas, Abram was “discovered” by creator Russell Morash, who had commissioned him to build a barn. So taken with Abram’s work, Morash invited the carpenter to help with the renovation of a house in Boston’s historic Dorchester section – with a WGBH camera crew recording the process for a series. It was an instant success, and Abram catapulted into home improvement guru status. He served as master carpenter of “This Old House” since the series’ 1979 premiere and host of “The New Yankee Workshop” a decade later.

The Hornets started the game with the ball but turned the ball over on a fumble recovered by Ben Woodfield. Jacob Woodfield took the handoff on the first Lion play from scrimmage and raced the distance for a 65 yard touchdown. Chandler Perkins hit the PAT and the Lions held a 7-0 lead with 10:36 left in the first quarter.

Mineral Springs was able to take the ensuing kickoff and launch a nine play drive inside the Lion 30 yard line. However, Mount Ida forced a turnover on downs at the Lion 25 yard line.

The Hornet defense forced Mount Ida to work for their second touchdown with the Lions needing 16 plays to drive 75 yards. Jacob Woodfield scored from a couple feet out on the first play of the second quarter. Chandler hit the PAT and the Lions lead sat at 14.

Mount Ida forced another turnover on downs with a fumble recovered by the Hornets on their own 21 yard line. Mount Ida was unable to capitalize on their following drive, turning the ball over on downs on the Hornet two yard line.

Mount Ida would score again in the first half on a nine yard run by Drayton Standridge. Perkins hit the PAT to give the Lions a 21-0 lead at the half.

Mount Ida received the kickoff to open the second half. Ramsey Gilbert fell on the onside kick to start the Lion drive on the Hornet 49 yard line. Eleven plays later the Lions scored on a six yard run by Jacob Woodfield. Perkins had a rare miss on the PAT attempt and the Lions’ lead sat at 27 with 7:05 left in the third quarter.

Mount Ida’s final score came on a short field after a bad snap on a punt attempt by Mineral Springs ended with a Ben Woodfield tackling the punter on the Hornet 16 yard line.

Two plays into the drive a personal foul on the Hornets defense moved the Lions to the nine yard line. Three plays later Standridge went in from the one yard line to give the Lions a 33 point lead. Jacob Woodfield ran in for the two-point conversion to enact the sportsmanship rule with 2:10 left in the third quarter.

The lone Hornet score came as the clock ran to zero. Evan Erwin found KJ Hayes running down the visitor sideline for a 79 yard touchdown. They went for two with no time on the clock. A delay penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the Hornets to the 16 yard line for the two-point attempt. Payton Dorrell sacked Erwin to end the game with the Lions victorious 35-6.
