Poyen defeats Mount Ida 42-21

MOUNT IDA – The Lions started the game full of steam, but ran out of gas in the second half as the Poyen Indians marched to a 42-21 victory over Mount Ida.

The Lions looked as if they might be able to swap scores with the high powered Indian offense with both scoring on their opening drives. However, the Indians stepped out to a 21-7 lead and held a 28-13 lead at the half.

Poyen scored quickly on a 52 yard pass from QB Jaxson Carter to Jaden Cogburn. Lathan Aaron hit the PAT to give the Indians a 7-0 lead with 11:19 left in the first quarter.

Mount Ida’s opening drive was textbook Lion offense as they drove the ball 65 yards in 19 plays. Caleb White finished things off, scoring on a fourth and inches. John Hoeksema’s PAT was good and the game was tied with 1:38 to go in the first quarter.

Poyen rattled off back to back touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead. Carter scored on a six yard run at the 10:19 mark in the second quarter and then hit Brandon Sanchez on a 47 yard touchdown reception with 7:07 left in the first half. PATs on both were good.

Mount Ida took to the air in the next drive. Karter Rowton hit Jack Hoeksema for an 87 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion was just short and the Indians led21-13 with 6:03 in the half.

Poyen’s final score came with eight seconds left in the half. Carter broke loose for a 37 yard touchdown run. The PAT was good and they Indians took a 28-13 lead into the half.

Poyen was the first to strike in the second half, scoring on a 16 yard run by Blake Rhodes. The two point conversion failed and they held a 34-13 lead with 6:34 left in the third quarter.

Mount Ida was able to cut the lead to 13 on a six yard touchdown play. Jacob Woodfield sprinted toward the end zone from six yards out only to have the ball knocked into the end zone by an Indian. Baylor Bates pounced on the ball for the Lion touchdown with 1:40 to go in the fourth quarter. Caleb White carried the ball in for the two point conversion to cut the Poyen lead to 34-21.

Poyen scored the final points of the night at the 3:09 mark on a 23 yard run by Colton Lowe. Carter and Sanchez connected on a pass for the two point conversion to give them the 42-21 victory.

Mount Ida drops to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. They will travel to Cutter Morning Star next Friday. Kick off will be at 7 p.m.
