MOUNT IDA – The Junior Lions had their hands full with the visiting Murfreesboro Junior Rattlers, losing the nonconference match up 47-6.
The Junior Lions picked up the game against the Junior Rattlers earlier in the week after being off two weeks due to a COVID-19 quarantine. They took the field against Murfreesboro on only two days practice. Murfreesboro proved hard to stop scoring on three of their four possessions in the first half.
The Junior Rattlers scored on their first play from scrimmage on a 63 yard run by G Conway. Tavion Johnson took the ball in for the two point conversion. They would score again on a five yard run by Johnson and a 36 yard pass to Cash Lowery. Murfreesboro converted on one of their two two point conversion attempts to take a 22-0 lead into the half.
Murfreesboro scored their final touchdown in their first drive In the second half. Travis Reed raced 29 yards for the score. Layton Wilcher caught a pass in the end zone for the two point conversion.
Mount Ida was able to avoid the shut out thanks to a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. Dakota Beechy scooped up a fumble after a hiccup on a hand off. He found a hole on the right side of the field and raced 61 yards for the score.
Beechy led all Junior Lions with 79 yards and a touchdown on three carries. Peyton Dorrell was the workhorse for the Junior Lions with 15 carries for 28 yards. Dean Johnson had six carries for 11 yards, Isaiah Huff had two carries for five yards and Beau Westin had six carries for a yard. Gus Gray and Dalton Young also had carries for the Junior Lions.
Mount Ida will travel to Magnet Cove Thursday night to open the conference schedule. Kick off will be at 7 p.m. Limited seating will be available with tickets available at the game.
