MOUNT IDA – Homecoming didn’t turn out quite the way the Lions had hoped with the visiting Perryville Mustangs running away with a 33-14 victory.
Special teams was the highlight of the evening for the Lions with a fumble recovery on the opening kickoff starting things off for the Lions. They also scored eight points in the second half on a safety and and kickoff return for a touchdown.
Quinton Lowry got things started for the Lions when he came up with the ball on the opening kick off. However, the Lions would fumble the ball away three plays later. Perryville and Mount Ida would swap possessions before the Mustangs mounted their first scoring drive of the night. They marched 65 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 13 yard run by QB Tyler Givens. The PAT by Easton Walker was good and the Mustangs held a seven point lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
Mount Ida was able to move the ball to midfield on their next drive after starting on their own eight yard line only to fumble the ball away again.
Perryville marched 45 yards in 10 plays to score on a three yard run by Givens. the PAT was good and the Mustangs increased their lead to 14. Mount Ida drove the ball to the Perryville 13, but ended the half with an interception.
The Lions opened the second half with a quick scoring drive. It would be the only offensive score of the game for Mount Ida. Gavin Summitt returned the kick off to the Lion 29 yard line. Jacob Woodfield carried the ball to the 33 and Baylor Bates moved the line of scrimmage to the 35, setting up a third and four. Bates took the pitchout and raced 65 yards for a score. The two point conversion failed and the Lions had cut the Mustang lead to 14 with 10:30 left in the third quarter.
Perryville marched to the Lion 12 yard line only to find themselves in a fourth and 11 situation. Peyton Dorrell ended the drive with a sack at the Lion 18 yard line.
Mount Ida would fumble the ball away again, this time on the first play of the ensuing drive. Perryville would score three plays later on a four yard run by Crete Tippen.
A pair of penalties on the ensuing kick off pushed the Lions to their own 11 yard line and four plays later the Lions punted the ball away. Perryville scored six plays later on a six yard pass to Mason Roland. The PAT was good and they increased their lead to 33-6.
The Lions did earn two points on a safety in the fourth quarter when the Perryville deep snapper snapped the ball over the punter’s head and out of the back of the endzone with 11:06 to go in the game.
AJ Perez pick up the ensuing kick off and zig-zagged his way through the Mustang defense and into the endzone for a Lion touchdown. The two point conversion failed and the Lions had cut the Mustang lead to 19. That would be the final score of the game.
Mount Ida drops to 1-1 on the season and will host Jessieville next Friday with kick off set for 7 p.m.
