KPGC could be replaced with new 4,000 watt station

An application has been filed with the FCC for a new noncommercial FM radio station in Montgomery County, reports Len Doughty, station manager of KPGC 95.1 FM. If the application is approved, the new station would replace KPGC which has been broadcasting from Norman for 4 years. The programming would remain the same. The new station would broadcast at 4,000 Watts, expanding the coverage with significantly improved reception in Mt. Ida.
One thing that makes this station important, besides its Christian music and wholesome entertainment value, is the potential to be used for local emergency alerts. Like all TV and radio stations, KPGC uses the Emergency Alert System to broadcast state and national emergencies. However, local first responders are in discussion with Len to equip the station to make local real-time emergency alerts, as well. These alerts would inform you of local emergency information or the need for evacuations in case of a wildfire or other natural disaster. Once this has been worked out, you will be able to tune into the station for further information and instructions.
The proposed frequency for the new station is 88.7 FM. With limited space available on the FM band, there is competition from several other applicants for 88.7. The FCC has a formal process to decide whose application wins, and points are allotted to rural applicants in areas with limited reception of noncommercial FM stations. Public comments to the FCC are allowed. The application filed by His Will, Inc., the nonprofit parent company of KPGC, and a link for comments can be viewed online. Go to KPGC951.com or NormanAR.com for a link to the FCC website. The application and all of the attachments are also available in a Public Inspection File at Norman City Hall. Len welcomes your comments or questions at (870) 334-2082 or KPGCLP@gmail.com.
