Football playoff spots up in the air

DEWAYNE HOLLOWAY|dewayne@mcnews.online

With week nine of the football season upon us the 5-2A Conference finds itself with a lot of options as the post season approaches.
While all four teams in the conference will advance to the 2A playoffs this year, there are three teams with a shot at the Number One seed going into the postseason.
Currently Magnet Cove sits atop the standings with a 2-0 conference record and a 5-4 overall record. Poyen and Mount Ida are tied in second place with 1-1 conference records. Poyen has a 5-3 overall record and Mount Ida has a 4-3 overall record. Gurdon is in fourth place with an 0-2 conference record and a 5-3 overall record.
The next two weeks could bring a lot of changes to the playoff seeding with Mount Ida set to play Gurdon this Friday and Poyen and Magnet Cove set to play next Friday.
Mount Ida needs a big win over Gurdon this week with tiebreaker points possibly determining who wins the Number One seed at the end of the season. If Mount Ida loses to Gurdon they could drop as low as fourth place in the standings.
A Magnet Cove victory next week secures the Number One spot for them. However, a Poyen victory would force a three way tie for the top spot which would bring tiebreaker points into play.
Three way ties are determined by choosing the two teams with the most tiebreaker points then the head to head winner gets the higher seed. Currently Magnet Cove has 15 tiebreaker points, Poyen has 13 and Mount Ida has six.
Poyen would need at least a three point victory over Gurdon to make the final cut in the tiebreaker while Mount Ida would need a minimum of 10 points in a victory over Gurdon to have a shot at the Number One spot.
To summarize:
Magnet Cove defeats Poyen they are the Number One seed.
Mount Ida beats Gurdon by 10 or more and Poyen beats Magnet Cove by three or more Mount Ida finishes with the One Seed, Poyen would be the Two Seed, Magnet Cove the Three Seed and Gurdon the Four Seed.
Mount Ida beats Gurdon by less than 10 and Poyen beats Magnet Cove three or more Poyen finishes with the One Seed (by way of head to head matchup with Magnet Cove), Magnet Cove is the Two Seed, Mount Ida is the Three Seed and Gurdon finishes with the Four Seed.
If Mount Ida loses to Gurdon and Poyen wins Poyen finishes with the One Seed, Magnet Cove is the Two Seed, Gurdon is the Three Seed and Mount Ida has the Four Seed.
If Magnet Cove and Mount Ida wins then Magnet Cove is the One Seed, Mount Ida is the Two Seed, Poyen is the Three Seed and Gurdon is in Fourth.
At least that is the way we have it figured out here at the Montgomery County News office.
The Mount Ida Lions will host Gurdon Friday at 7 p.m. with a lot on the line. They will finish their regular season schedule next week with a trip to Murfreesboro.
