Cattle hauler catches fire, blocks Highway 27/8 near Norman

NORMAN – Local Firemen and law enforcement officers responded quickly to a fire on Highway 27/8 at the Southern border of Norman this afternoon (Friday, September 24). 

Once first responders arrived on scene they discovered an 18-wheeler hauling a cattle trailer on fire on the northbound side of the road. The fire was limited to the rear axle of the trailer, but flames had engulfed the rear of the trailer by the time the firetrucks arrived.

Norman Volunteer Fire Department were first on the scene and they quickly extinguished the fire on the rear of the trailer. The trailer had come to a stop near the intersection of Highway 27/8 and Waggoner Street.

Caddo Gap Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the emergency call. There was a grass fire possibly related to the truck fire further south on Highway 27/8. The Caddo Gap VFD truck extinguished the flames and advanced to the truck’s location to assist Norman VFD.

Traffic was blocked on the highway for several minutes while emergency personnel dealt with the fire. Traffic was allowed to resume once it was deemed safe.

The status of the cattle on the trailer is not known at this time.

Norman VFD, Caddo Gap VFD and Mount Ida/South Fork VFD responded to the fire. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was also onhand to assist as needed.
