MOUNT IDA – The Akansa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored Norton Kaut for his service in the military and his time served overseas during World War II.
The Akansa Chapter of the DAR met with Kaut Monday, November 9, at the Montgomery County Assisted Living Facility in Mount Ida. They presented him with a Certificate of Service honoring his time in World War II. He also received a card signed by the members of the DAR Akansa Chapter thanking him for his service.
Mary Margaret Willmuth and Pat McLemore were on hand to represent the ladies of DAR Akansa Chapter.
Kaut celebrated his 97th birthday Monday at his residence at the Assisted Living Facility. He joined the Air Force after graduating high school and was stationed in England where he worked as an airplane mechanic. One of the airplanes he worked on while in England was the famed Memphis Belle.
Kaut stated in an article printed in the Hot Springs Sentinel Record that after he was discharged, he began hearing tales of the famous bomber and realized he had been a part of history.
He was stationed in California for a while after leaving England. While in San Francisco he worked on C-54 planes before they were deployed to the Pacific Theater to be used against the Japanese.
